  1. Laser is the appreviation for "light 
  2. amplification by stimulated emission of
  3. radiation"

  5. A laser is a device for producing a narrow 
  6. beam of light, capable of travelling over 
  7. vast distances without dispersion, and of 
  8. being focused to give enormous power 
  9. densities (108 watts per cm2 for high-energy 
  10. lasers). The laser operates on a principle 
  11. similar to that of the maser 
  12. (a high-frequency microwave amplifier or 
  13. oscillator). The uses of lasers include 
  14. communications (a laser beam can carry much 
  15. more information than can radio waves), 
  16. cutting, drilling, welding, satellite 
  17. tracking, medical and biological research, 
  18. and surgery.
